Stochastic Suprasegmentals: Relationships between Redundancy, Prosodic Structure and Syllabic Duration
نویسنده
چکیده
Prosodic Prominence and prosodic boundaries have been shown to effect syllabic durations. However another factor, redundancy, also appears to have a major impact. More common words and words you can easily predict from context (more redundant) tend to be articulated less clearly and so also have a tendency to have shortened syllabic durations. This paper explores the relationship between measures of redundancy, prosodic structure and syllabic duration of a large corpus of spontaneous speech. Although 50% (r=0.71) of syllable variation is predictable from measures of accentedness, break index and other prosodic parameters, word frequency alone predicts 11% of the duration variation. Combining prosodic information and redundancy measurements improves prediction by 0.75% (r=0.72), suggesting that although redundancy measurements can offer a statistically independent contribution to predicting syllabic duration, prosodic structure implicitly represents most of the variation caused by redundancy.

Stochastic suprasegmentals: relationship between the spectral characteristics of vowels, redundancy and prosodic structure
Previous work has shown a relationship between syllabic duration, redundancy within speech, and prosodic structure [1]. In addition, a spectral care of articulation measure of vowels in spontaneous speech has supported these duration results and suggest that care of articulation varies inversely with redundancy and conversely with prosodic prominence. However, these spectral measures remain inc...
متن کاملStochastic suprasegmentals: relationships between redundancy, prosodic structure and care of articulation in spontaneous speech
Within spontaneous speech there are wide variations in the articulation of the same word by the same speaker. Some words become extremely reduced while others seem to stand out more strongly in a phrase or sentence. This thesis explores these variations in articulation from two different but, arguably, related perspectives, prosodic structure and redundancy. I argue that the constraint of produ...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners
The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...
متن کاملLanguage redundancy predicts syllabic duration and the spectral characteristics of vocalic syllable nuclei.
The language redundancy of a syllable, measured by its predictability given its context and inherent frequency, has been shown to have a strong inverse relationship with syllabic duration. This relationship is predicted by the smooth signal redundancy hypothesis, which proposes that robust communication in a noisy environment can be achieved with an inverse relationship between language redunda...
متن کاملTowards Automatic Annotation of Temporal Features in Discourse: The Case of Syllabic Duration in Spontaneous French
Numerous discourse functions systematically resort to the prosodic resources found in the speakers’ management of temporal features. These resources concern pauses, syllabic duration modifications and speech rate. However, the description and modelling of temporal phenomena constitutes a particularly delicate endeavour, mainly because, contrary to intonation and intensity, they cannot be based ...
